The Munchkin Oakleaf Hydrangea will be a focal point in any landscape partly because it has a long blooming period and because the flowers are absolutely stunning. Large 6-inch tall clusters of white flowers bloom in June and last until fall. The flowers gradually turn into a deep, dusty pink throughout the summer. The blooms of the Hydrangea quercifolia are held up on strong, woody stems and surrounded by dense, deeply lobed green foliage.
Oakleaf Hydrangea has a mounded, upright growth habit, giving this shrub a full and rounded appearance. This medium-sized shrub will grow 3 to 4 feet tall, making it a good size to use along a foundation wall or in a bed or mass planting, where it will be visible but will not overwhelm the entire bed. This shrub can also be used to create a lovely flowering hedge. Trim the flower clusters to use in arrangements. The Munchkin Oakleaf Hydrangea grows as a perennial in USDA zones 5 through 9.
Munchkin Oakleaf Hydrangea Care
Plant the Munchkin Oakleaf Hydrangea in partial sun. Let the top few inches of soil dry out before giving this shrub water. Plant in soil that is rich and moist but well-drained. Fertilize using a balanced or all-purpose plant food each spring before the flowers bloom.
Remove damaged growth at any time. Oakleaf Hydrangea plants bloom on old wood, so shape the plant after the flowers die in the late summer or early fall.
Munchkin Oakleaf Hydrangea Spacing
This upright mounded plant will grow 4 to 6 feet wide and 3 to 4 feet tall. Shrubs can be planted 3 to 5 feet apart to create a hedge or leave more space to make a focal point.
