My Fair Maiden Japanese Silver Grass (Miscanthus sinensis ‘My Fair Maiden’) offers a towering display of elegant foliage topped by showy plumes in late summer. Its cascading green foliage creates an impressive silhouette that complements perennial beds and mixed borders. This selection forms a strong columnar shape, making it the perfect focal point or back-border statement. In our opinion, few ornamental grasses match its graceful presence and season-long interest.
A triploid hybrid originally from Asia, My Fair Maiden exhibits minimal seed production, reducing concerns about invasive spread. Its drought tolerance and deer resistance allow for worry-free use in mass plantings, privacy screens, or as an accent near water features. My Fair Maiden is low-maintenance and requires just basic soil and occasional irrigation once established. Place it in full sun for best performance, and enjoy the distinctive plumes that shimmer well into autumn.
My Fair Maiden Japanese Silver Grass Care
Select a planting site that receives at least six hours of daily sun. Plant in well-draining soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH, and water regularly during the first growing season. A balanced fertilizer in early spring helps maintain lush growth. Once roots have established, supplemental watering can be reduced, though consistent moisture supports the tallest, fullest plumes.
Prune the dry stalks back to a few inches above ground level in late winter to refresh the plant. Container-grown specimens benefit from regular checking of soil moisture, especially in hot climates. For overwintering in colder zones, mulch around the base to protect the crown from freeze damage. Maintain most of the older foliage through winter to insulate the crown.
My Fair Maiden Japanese Silver Grass Spacing
Allow about five to six feet of space between plants if you’re creating a grouping or specimen planting. For a row or privacy screen, a gap of four to five feet encourages a flowing, unified display. When using containers, opt for a sturdy pot of at least 16 to 18 inches in diameter to accommodate the mature root system.
