This dahlia is a knockout! Dainty lemon yellow to dark yellow star shaped flowers dance above dramatic dark bronze/almost black foliage creating drama wherever you plant it. In your landscape or in a container Mystic Illusion is sure to please! Companion plant with lush green foliage and taller background plantings for a garden that will be the envy of your neighbors. Butterflies enjoy the flowers and will be frequent visitors to your garden.
Mystic Illusion has a mounding habit and tops out at 36 inches tall and 16 inches wide and is a perennial in Zones 8a through 11b. In Zones 3 through 7, plant out after the danger of the last frost and lift the tubers in the fall after frost kills the plant. Let the tubers dry, brush off the dirt and pack in newspaper or peat moss. Store in a dark cool area between 35 to 45 degrees but do not let freeze.
Mystic Illusion Dahlia Care
Dahlias enjoy full sun and good draining average soil. Fertilizing regularly with a low nitrogen fertilizer like a 5-10-10 or a 10-20-20 will result in vigorous growth and flowering. If you have heavy clay soil, consider amending the soil with aged manure or coarse sand. Dahlias prefer a pH level of 6.5 to 7.0.
Once tubers are planted resist watering them after the initial time until they have sprouted as the tuber will rot with too much watering. Deadheading will encourage plants to keep producing beautiful blooms all summer long.
Mystic Illusion Dahlia Spacing
Space plants 12 to 16 inches apart to allow plants to fill out. Unlike some dahlias, Mystic Illusion is resistant to powdery mildew but can be damaged by thrips, spider mites or slugs/snails. Signs of an infestation are dry curled up leaves or spots on leaves. Appropriate products can be purchased from your local hardware store to safely address these pests. With moderate care and attention from you, Mystic Illusion Dahlias will continue to amaze and delight you year after year.
