Growing Zones
This native perennial could not have more perfect timing. Just beginning to bud when we hit that period in summer when everything seems to slow down this vigorous grower is just getting started. Eight inch diameter flowers appear on 24 inch tall stems in late July on a plant that has a 24 to 38 inch spread and will continue to put on a show well into September.
A perennial with upright stems and big, rounded leaves, it is native to wetlands and creeks of the southeastern U.S. A good choice as an accent plant in a perennial bed, focal point in the garden and would do well in a pot or container that is at least 24 inches wide to 24 inches deep. This hardy perennial is low maintenance, disease resistant and does well in zones 4 to 8.
Native Rose Mallow Care
This large, flowering native does best in full sun in rich soil that is moist but well-drained. It will grow happily in fertile garden soil and is tolerant of a wide range of soil types. Prefers soils that are slightly acidic.
Remove spent blossoms to prevent seed development which could rob the plant of the energy needed to produce new blossoms. Once the season has past the dried stalks may be cut down to 3 to 4 inches above the soil line.
Native Rose Mallow Spacing
Native Rose Mallow should be spaced at a distance of 36 inches apart and would do well as an informal, low hedge, accent plant or specimen plant in the perennial border. Grown in a pot or container it would do well planted alone or in groups.
