Plants sold under the NativeStar® label have been bred to have all of the best attributes of the native parent plants and more. Plum Pudding Viburnum is a perfect example. This nativar features dense, deep green foliage and frothy blooms filled with sweet nectar fit for all types of pollinators. The blooms mature into masses of blue berries through the summer, while the foliage turns a sensational deep maroon color in the fall. Viburnum dentatum NativeStar® ‘Plum Pudding’ is also known to be a host plant for caterpillars of azure butterflies as well as a favorite food for many songbirds and other local wildlife.

Plum Pudding Viburnum is exceptionally easy to grow and requires little maintenance during the year. Pests and diseases are a thing of the past for this improved cultivar of Arrowwood Viburnum. Use this medium-sized, deciduous shrub to add color to an informal hedge, the back of a garden bed, or a foundation planting mixed with broadleaf evergreens. Plum Pudding will stand out as one of the stars of your garden in fall when the foliage turns shades of dramatically dark plum.

NativeStar® Plum Pudding Viburnum Care

Viburnum is highly adaptable and grows well when planted in a wide range of soil conditions and sun exposures. Full sun to part shade, average well-drained soil, and a neutral soil pH all guarantee easy care and excellent flowering for many years. Viburnum is also able to thrive in locations with heavy clay or near black walnut trees where other plants struggle. Installing drip irrigation or soaker hoses during the initial planting will simplify watering and allow moisture to be efficiently delivered to the root zone.

Annual pruning is best done after flowering has finished in early summer. Plum Pudding flowers on the previous season's growth and has a medium growth habit. Cut back overgrowth using either heading cuts (clean cuts just above a set of leaves to control width or height) or thinning cuts to remove whole branches. Thinning cuts need to be made as close to the main stems as possible to open up the overall shape and allow more air circulation to the middle of the shrub.

NativeStar® Plum Pudding Viburnum Care Spacing

The mature size for Plum Pudding Viburnum is 5-7 feet tall with a spread of  4-6 feet. Plant multiple plants 4-5 feet apart when planning an informal hedge. Shallow-rooted plants such as annuals and most perennials can be placed 18-24 inches away from the base of the shrub. Early spring blooming bulbs can be planted within 12 inches of the base.

Plant Addicts Warranty - 1 Year (Extra Purchase Required)

We encourage all plant lovers to purchase the Plant Addicts Warranty, whether you're a new gardener or an expert. There are many variables outside of anyone's control that can cause a plant to die. Hungry animals, drought, poor soil conditions, over watering, diseases & pests are all good examples of what can cause plants to die. The Plant Addicts Warranty is a 1 year warranty protecting you from all of the unknowns and will replace your plant if something were to happen to it.

The warranty is purchased on a per plant basis and must be purchased at the same time as the plant(s). We will cover 100% of the price of the plant, but the warranty does not cover shipping costs. SImply let us know if your plant has died within 1 year of receiving it and we will get you a new one shipped out as soon as possible (depending on the time of the year and availability). We may ask for photos for documentation purposes, but we try to make the process as easy as possible.

Guarantee and Warranty

Plant Shipping

Below are some factors we consider when determining when to ship the plants depending on the timing of the order.

Winter to Early Spring

We ship only when it's warm enough to plant in your growing zone.
Sometimes plants aren't completely ready to sell and ship in early spring. We will wait until the plants are ready before shipping so you don't get a subpar product.
For Southern plants we will be able to ship much earlier than plants coming from our northern nursery.

Summer

If there is extreme heat we may delay shipping for a week or several weeks.
We review what areas the plants are traveling through as well as your location.

Fall into Winter

We’ll ship plants out all the way up to the end of the fall planting season!

Winter

Get your order in early to reserve your plants for Spring planting!
