The NativeStar® Raisinette Viburnum is the perfect solution for a damp area in need of greenery and flowers. Also known as Viburnum cassinoides, this shrub produces fragrant spring flowers that turn into fall berries. The berries are green when they first emerge and later turn a bright red. The green ovate foliage has a thick, leathery texture and transitions into a bright red hue by fall.
As a native plant, this Viburnum is low maintenance and naturally grows in marshy areas. This deciduous shrub works well in a cottage garden or woodland-inspired space. Create a hedge, define a property line or outdoor space, or use this Viburnum in a mixed planting. Butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds are known to frequent the flowers, while the foliage is deer resistant for added convenience. Grow the NativeStar® Raisinette Viburnum in zones 4 through 9.
NativeStar® Raisinette Viburnum Care
Plant this viburnum in full sun for best performance, although it can handle partial shade. The NativeStar® Raisinette Viburnum grows in damp soil, so additional watering will be appreciated in dry soil and during drought. The soil should be rich and loamy, but this plant is adaptable. Fertilize a few times throughout the growing season using a balanced plant food for shrubs.
Shape the plant as needed immediately after the flowers fade. Removing flowers will reduce the amount of berries, so be mindful when pruning. Spread a thick layer of mulch around the base of the plant to insulate against chilly temperatures during the winter.
NativeStar® Raisinette Viburnum Spacing
Once mature, the NativeStar® Raisinette Viburnum reaches 5 to 7 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet across. Create a bright hedge by spacing shrubs about 4 feet apart. A single Viburnum can grow in an 18-inch wide container.
