The Neon Burst™ Dogwood is a dependable shrub that can handle challenging summer weather while continuing to look fantastic. New leaves of the Cornus alba grow on bold red stems and are chartreuse with hints of bronze. During the summer, the leaves transition to brilliant chartreuse. The hardy foliage resists scorching even during peak afternoon summer sun and heat. The dazzling leaves display purple, red, yellow, and orange hues during the fall. This deciduous shrub loses its foliage during the winter, but the stems turn a glossy deep scarlet red for an unexpected pop of color.
Use this dogwood to provide four seasons of color as part of a mass planting, hedge, or accent. The compact form makes this an excellent plant to feature along a fence or foundation wall. The Neon Burst™ Dogwood is a mounded, upright plant that can easily live as a perennial in USDA zones 2 through 7. Clusters of creamy white flowers bloom in the spring but are generally not very showy. This perennial is grown for its beautiful foliage.
Neon Burst™ Dogwood Care
Plant in full sun to partial shade and use moist but well-drained soil. The soil should have a slightly acidic or neutral pH. Water the plant weekly, especially during the first growing season. Once it is established, the plant may not need as much help with water, but give it a drink when the top several inches of soil are dry.
Apply a balanced fertilizer every few weeks during the growing season to support new growth. The Neon Burst™ Dogwood is a mounded shrub that naturally maintains a rounded shape, so pruning is not necessary, but you can trim the plant to better fit your space.
Neon Burst™ Dogwood Spacing
This upright plant will grow 4 to 5 feet tall and wide. When creating a hedge or mass planting, dogwood shrubs can be spaced 2 to 4 feet apart.
