The New Age Lavender Lilac has everything there is to love about a lilac but in less space. This spectacular bloomer has a small size but still produces lovely full-size lavender flowers that grow in dense clusters. The Syringa vulgaris blooms in the spring and features tubular, star-shaped flowers. The petals curl back, adding dimension and revealing tiny yellow stamens. This deciduous shrub has bold green foliage that comes to a point. 

This cultivar has an upright growth habit and does not grow as large as other lilac varieties. At about 5 feet tall, it is an attractive option for gardeners with limited space. Use this shrub to create a hedge or border to better define outdoor areas. Plant this lilac where the fragrant blooms can be enjoyed, and the flowers can be trimmed to display inside. The New Age Lavender Lilac is a beautiful and low-maintenance plant that grows as a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 7.

New Age Lavender Lilac Care

Plant in full to partial sun using a moist, well-drained soil with high organic content. The New Age Lavender Lilac has average water needs, so water weekly or when the top several inches of the soil are dry. Feed this plant using an application of balanced fertilizer in the spring. A layer of organic mulch around the base can continue to support growth and keep the soil damp longer.

Remove spent flower clusters to keep the plant looking tidy and encourage more growth. Shape the plant as needed shortly after the flowers are done blooming and before the following year’s buds are set.
