Growing Zones
Traditionally Boxwood has been used in many different garden designs. It is good for making tidy low hedges and fun or formal topiary. NewGen Freedom® Boxwood is a great addition to this evergreen family of shrubs. NewGen is much more disease and pest resistant than older varieties. It can be used instead of less disease resistant varieties such as ‘Wintergreen’ or Green Beauty’.
The glossy, green foliage is compact and dense, lending itself to topiary and hedge forming. NewGen Freedom® is a moderate grower and will require annual clipping to keep its neat, tidy appearance. Because it grows at a rate of 3-4 inches a year, it also fills in quickly for hedges.
NewGen Freedom® Boxwood Care
Boxwood needs full sun to stay healthy and green. They tolerate an acidic soil but do best with a neutral 7.0 pH. Moderately fertile and moist soil must be free draining to avoid any root rot diseases. Boxwood requires minimal watering after establishing
Pruning can be an annual event, done before new growth starts early in the spring. This is a good time to remove any dead or dying branch tips that might not have made it through the winter. Pruning time is also a great time to feed the Boxwood with a slow release, balanced fertilizer. One feeding is all that is required per season. This will help the new evergreen growth to maintain its color and vigor.
NewGen Freedom® Boxwood Spacing
Spacing of 4 feet on center is best when planting this Boxwood to grow into a hedge. If topiary is the goal for NewGEn Freedom®, they can be planted at a larger spacing to allow for the whole shape to be seen. With an overall height of 4-5 feet and width of 4-5feet, Boxwood works in formal containers or as part of a seasonal mixed planter.
