Next Gen Pistachio Hydrangea was specifically bred to grow in containers and the smallest garden spaces. The large leaves and even larger mophead flower clusters have a distinctive combination of lime green and juicy chartreuse that remains vibrant for the entire duration of blooming. This extremely hardy selection reblooms with little effort and is great for use in cut flower arranging.
The sturdy stems easily support the large flower clusters without the need for staking or preemptive pruning. Next Generation® hydrangeas grow quickly and bloom on both old and new wood, making pruning fool-proof, regardless of the timing. For maximum impact, plant groups of Next Generation® Pistachio Hydrangeas in a deciduous shrub border or mixed bed, or use this shrub as an accent in pots for an outdoor living space.
Next Gen Pistachio Hydrangea Care
Next Gen Pistachio appreciates soil that stays moist and drains well. Rich, loamy soil is also preferred. In warmer climates, select a planting location with sun early in the morning and then dappled or bright shade for the rest of the day. Fertilize annually in the spring with a formula for acid-loving trees and shrubs. Supplemental watering will be needed upon planting and during periods of drought and excess heat.
Pruning is easy with Next Generation® hydrangeas. The flowers form on both old and new wood, so there is no wrong time to shape the branches or to clean up winter damage. The long-lasting flower heads make deadheading almost non-existent. In late winter, prune any branches damaged from heavy winds or storms to encourage new growth. Adding a 3-4 inch layer of organic material around the root zone is helpful in the colder growing zones, but not strictly necessary.
Next Gen Pistachio Hydrangea Spacing
With an overall height of 2-5 feet and a spread of 4-5 feet, Next Gen Pistachio Hydrangea is easy to fit into an existing garden border or medium-size planter. Space plants 4 feet from each center when planting in groups. Select a pot with a minimum diameter of 16 inches when growing a single specimen.
