Hosta collectors will want to provide a spot in their shady woodland garden for this lovely Night Before Christmas Hosta. As a sport of Hosta ‘White Christmas’, this medium-sized Hosta features fantastically tall and lavender-hued scapes late in the summer. The deep green and bright white variegated leaves are sure to brighten any dark corners of the garden. Hosta fortunei ‘Night Before Christmas’ was recognized by the Royal Horticultural Society in Britain as a plant of Garden Merit in 2012.
Night Before Christmas Hosta makes a stunning mass planting with a clean, modern look. This plant also grows well in containers and will happily regrow year after year when repotted on an annual basis. Hostas can be damaged by deer, slugs, and snails. In areas with high deer pressure, try growing Hostas in containers or planters placed close to areas of high human traffic such as s entryways or outdoor seating areas. Slugs and snails can be controlled with good garden hygiene in the fall and a sprinkling of slug repellent.
Night Before Christmas Hosta Care
Hostas favor a slightly acidic to neutral pH and thrive in well-draining but very rich and moisture-retentive soil. Shady locations will help the foliage remain deep green although Night Before Christmas will tolerate some sun either early in the day or very late in the afternoon. Hostas grow best in USDA zones 3-9 and need a certain number of days below 40 degrees F (4 C) to perform well. Provide supplemental watering with drip irrigation or soaker hoses, and mulch the root zone annually with any finely shredded organic material that is.
No pruning or deadheading is required for Hostas. The flower spike (scape) appears late in the summer for Night before Christmas and will die back as the plant begins to go dormant for the fall and winter. If you have issues with slugs and snails, fall is the ideal time to clean off the spent foliage from the plant and clear away any gastropod eggs hiding among the leaves and soil. Otherwise, leave the spent foliage to mulch the growing crown during the winter, and remove it late in the winter or early spring to make way for the next season's growth.
Night Before Christmas Hosta Spacing
With a height of 18 inches and a spread of 36 inches, this is not a plant that will get lost in the ground cover of a woodland or other shady garden. Space plants 24-30 inches apart when planting in groups. Provide a pot with at least a 16-inch diameter to grow on a covered deck or shady porch.
