When looking for a heat- and drought-tolerant, blooming plant, it is hard to beat a succulent like the Night Light Stonecrop Sedum (Sedum 'Night Light'). This summer bloomer produces clusters of buttermilk yellow flowers that fade to blush pink. The flowers sit atop matte eggplant-purple, sturdy, succulent stems, growing together in a thick mound. This contrast of dark stems and foliage paired with the dainty pastel flowers makes the Night Light Stonecrop a true sight to behold, thriving in the hottest, driest months without a second thought. This succulent perennial grows to be 22-26 inches tall and 30-36 inches wide, easily covering sections of a sunny rock garden or filling out a low-maintenance container.
The Night Light Stonecrop is a low maintenance plant that is ideal for hot, dry garden areas that may have less access to water. Extremely drought tolerant, Sedum is also generally considered deer resistant. Because succulents like to dry out in between watering, the Night Light Stonecrop easily grows in well-draining containers without as much worry about watering.
Night Light Stonecrop Sedum Care
Sedum can grow well in poorer soils given that they have adequate drainage. Plant the Night Light Stonecrop Sedum in a hole that is twice the width and the same depth as the root ball. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out in between watering. Sedum will do best in full sun with access to at least 6 hours of direct sun a day.
In colder regions, Sedum may die back in the winter after it goes dormant. Trim back dried up stems and flower heads in late winter or early spring before new growth appears. If grown in lower light levels or rich soils, Sedum may become leggy, requiring trimming in the summer to prevent the stems from splitting or breaking.
Night Light Stonecrop Sedum Spacing
To grow as a standalone plant, allow the Night Light Stonecrop at least 3 feet of space to grow to its natural mature size. For mass planting, space the plants slightly closer together. To keep it in a container, provide this Stonecrop with a pot that is a bit wider than the root ball, though succulents are typically fine growing in tight pots.
