Growing Zones
This deciduous mop head hydrangea produces gorgeous 4-inch blue blooms all summer long. Blossoms appear throughout the plant and not just on the top like that of other varieties. The flower heads may turn pinker in more alkaline soils.
This quick-growing plant will reach full size in only two or three years. It’s a good choice for a fast-growing privacy screen. This shrub can be used to create a colorful hedge, foundation planting, an addition to a mixed shrub border or as an accent plant. Cut a few flowers to create beautiful bouquets and use the dried flowers for craft projects.
Nikko Blue Hydrangea Care
Nikko Blue Hydrangea will mature to a height and width of 4 to 6 feet in a mounded shape. Flowers are produced on the previous year’s growth. Hydrangea macrophylla 'Nikko Blue' prefers partial sun conditions in moist, well-drained soils. Plant it in a sheltered location away from prevailing winds in windier locations. This shrub generally doesn’t need pruning. Prune out weak or winter-damaged stems in late winter/early spring. If shaping is desired, cutting back flowering stems to a pair of healthy buds after the flowering period has ended.
Nikko Blue Hydrangea Spacing
Space individual plants 4 feet apart, center on center to create a garden border. In a mass planting, space 6 feet apart. When planting in a garden planter, use a container at least 36 inches wide with drainage holes.
