Growing Zones
Norway Spruce is a hardy conifer that will add year-round greenery to a landscape and has the classic good looks of a Christmas tree. Also known as Picea abies, this sizable tree will grow 80 to 100 feet tall. The gently arching branches are adorned with dark green needles. Mature trees will grow 4- to 6-inch long cones that gracefully hang from the main branches in the spring.
Once established, this tree can withstand very strong winds, making it a wonderful plant to feature along a windswept field to shield a home or yard. Use this tree to create a border and add greenery to a drab landscape. Norway Spruce are fast-growing evergreen trees that can grow as much as two feet per year under good conditions. This tree is a perennial in USDA zones 3 through 8.
Norway Spruce Care
Norway Spruce requires full sun to partial shade, so find a spot that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight. Soil should be rich, moist but well-draining, and acidic. Deeply water the tree once a week for the first year, but it will sustain itself after that. Fertilizing is not needed unless the soil is low-quality.
Shape the tree in late winter or early spring. Be careful when pruning to retain the tree's natural shape. Remove the center branch growth at points where two branches grow out to the sides to create a full and bushy look.
Norway Spruce Spacing
The Norway Spruce is a big tree that can reach 80 to 100 feet tall and spread 30 to 40 feet. Space trees 12 to 15 to create a border or privacy screen. Plant a Norway Spruce 60 to 100 feet from houses or other structures.
