This deciduous fig tree produces great tasting medium-sized brown to bronze figs with sweet amber to strawberry-red flesh. It’s one of the best figs created by Dr. Ed O'Rourke. This fig is a winner as it’s renowned for production, growth habit, hardiness and disease resistance.
This self-fertile fig is a great addition to a home orchard or for use as a specimen plant or container garden. At maturity, Ficus carica L. 'O'Rourke' will reach a height and width between 8 and 10 feet. Prune to keep the size in check in a container garden. O’Rourke Fig was developed by the fig breeding program at the LSU Agricultural Center in 2007.
O'Rourke Fig Care
Plant O'Rourke Fig in a full sun location in USDA plant hardiness zones 7 to 9. This tree is tolerant of salt and humidity, plus it’s deer resistant. It has a partially closed eye and 5-lobed leaves. This fruit on this fig cultivar ripens earlier in the summer than that on most other fig varieties. Water during dry periods and be sure to regularly water if using O’Rourke Fig in a container garden. Containers, especially terra cotta ones dry out quickly.
O'Rourke Fig Spacing
Space individual trees 8 to 10 feet apart, center on center. This ensure enough space for ample sunlight to reach the tree and for harvesting the fruit.
