The Oakland Holly, Ilex Magland, is newer to the scene but just as exciting! It has dense foliage that has a pyramidal growing habit making it perfect for use as a screen or hedge. It is easy to grow and extremely adaptable. You get beautiful green leaves all year, and in the winter, it's full of red berries.
The foliage is dense and glossy deep green. It has an appearance similar to an oak leaf. In the winter it develops red berries without a male pollinizer and looks stunning. It is pest, disease, and deer resistant. The Oakland Holly can reach a height of between twelve and twenty feet. Its spread can be anywhere from eight to fifteen. This Holly can be used for screening purposes, as a hedge, or as a border plant. It can be planted alone as a focal point and will still develop loads of berries!
Oakland Holly Care
This vigorous grower can be planted in sun or shade. While it prefers moist soil that is well drained and rich. However, it is highly adaptable. It can tolerate all soil types and is not picky about Ph levels. It has average water needs. It can handle both wet and dry soils. Pruning is recommended in heavy shade. In partial shade or full sun, pruning is not necessary, but can be done to shape. Fertilizer can be applied in the spring.
Oakland Holly Spacing
Spacing for the Oakland Holly should be, at minimum four to five feet, center on center. Spacing provides roots room to develop especially spacing in proximity.
