Growing Zones
Enjoy lovely, good looks and function with the Oakleaf Geranium or Pelargonium quercifolium. Tiny pink flowers with mauve accents bloom during summer. The lobed foliage has an oak leaf shape with frilly edges. Leaves are dark green with dark purple along the midrib and veining, adding even more interest and dimension. The leaves have a balsam scent, allowing this plant to be a natural and effective insect repellent.
This plant forms dense mounds. Plant Oakleaf Geraniums in a mixed bed, border, or container. Potted plants can be featured on a deck or patio space, helping to keep buzzing insects at bay. The tiny blooms also make lovely cut flowers. Oakleaf Geranium is heat and drought tolerant, making this a low-maintenance addition to an outdoor space. This fragrant geranium is hardy in zones 9 through 10 but is often grown as an annual in other areas.
Oakleaf Geranium Care
Select a sunny spot with at least 6 hours of sunlight for the Oakleaf Geranium. This geranium prefers moist and well-drained soil, and should be watered when the top few inches of soil are dry. Fertilize geraniums upon planting and every 2 to 4 weeks during the growing season. Pinch back spent blooms to keep the plant looking tidy and to encourage more growth.
Oakleaf Geraniums can spend the winter indoors. Cut back overgrowth and move the plant to a spot with bright, indirect sunlight. Plants grown indoors may not bloom, but they will survive until they move back outside.
Oakleaf Geranium Spacing
Oakleaf Geranium plants grow 1 to 2 feet tall and wide. Space plants in a border or mixed bed a distance of 12 inches apart. Two to three plants can comfortably grow in a 12-inch container.
