Ocean Sunset™ Violet Flare Ice Plant (Delosperma hybrida 'Florsaika') produces bold purple-pink flowers from late spring to early fall. Its evergreen, succulent foliage stays low to the ground, typically reaching only a few inches in height. The concentrated color and long bloom period make it a standout among other groundcovers. It outperforms many alternatives with a mix of drought tolerance, bright petals, and minimal upkeep.

Its compact form suits rock gardens, container plantings, and decorative borders. Deer usually avoid this ice plant, and diseases rarely pose a problem. Native to arid regions of Africa, it tolerates sunny, hot locations with ease. The thick, fleshy leaves help retain moisture, making it an excellent choice for waterwise landscapes or erosion control on slopes.

Ocean Sunset™ Violet Flare Ice Plant Care

Place this succulent in full sun for best flowering, and use gritty, fast-draining soil. Water lightly once established, and apply a mild, balanced fertilizer during active growth. Aim for neutral to slightly alkaline soil pH, though this plant adapts to a range of conditions. Avoid overwatering to discourage root issues.

Deadheading faded blooms maintains a tidy look. Pinch or thin crowded stems to promote better airflow, and shear lightly after the main flowering cycle. Trim damaged branches in late summer to keep its shape, and consider moving container-grown specimens indoors in winter if your climate is prone to freezing. A well-draining potting mix prevents water buildup that can harm the roots.

Ocean Sunset™ Violet Flare Ice Plant Spacing

Space plants 8 to 12 inches apart when creating a groundcover or row planting. Single specimens in borders or mixed beds benefit from a little extra room on all sides. A pot at least 8 inches in diameter is sufficient for a new plant, though larger containers may be needed as it matures.
