Ocean Sunset™ Violet Ice Plant (Delosperma hybrida 'T1854') showcases intense purple flowers that persist from late spring through early fall. It remains around 4 to 6 inches tall, forming a tidy mat of succulent foliage that stands out in garden beds or containers. This low-growing perennial outshines many typical groundcovers because it tolerates heat and dry conditions while still producing nonstop color. Many gardeners value its ability to add a bright accent even under intense sun.

Its dense leaves provide semi-evergreen coverage, and deer often skip over it in search of other plants. This Delosperma originates from South Africa’s arid regions and adapts well to various settings. It excels in rock gardens, mass plantings, edging, or covering slopes prone to erosion. Low water needs make it a suitable choice for gardeners wanting dependable color without frequent maintenance.

Ocean Sunset™ Violet Ice Plant Care

Position it in full sun and in sharply draining soil, adding grit or sand if necessary to prevent soggy roots. Water sparingly after the plant establishes, offering occasional deep soakings during extended drought. A light application of balanced fertilizer in spring can help maintain steady blooms. Slightly alkaline to neutral soil suits it, although it adjusts to multiple soil types as long as drainage is good.

Clip off faded flowers to keep the surface neat and encourage new buds. Pinching back straggly growth will retain a compact shape, though this Ice Plant seldom requires intensive pruning. In colder areas, protect roots with a thin mulch layer or move container-grown plants indoors if temperatures dip below freezing. Containers should have ample drainage to avoid waterlogged soil during wet weather.

Ocean Sunset™ Violet Ice Plant Spacing

Set plants 8 to 12 inches apart for tight coverage in beds or along borders. Larger mass plantings may need a spacing of 12 to 15 inches to accommodate spreading without overcrowding. For container displays, pick a pot at least 8 inches wide, with extra space if other plants will be included. Allow each plant enough room to expand and access moisture and nutrients.
