Growing Zones
For the most striking autumnal color, you can’t go wrong with the October Glory Red Maple. Also known as Acer rubrum 'October Glory', this tree develops dark-green glossy foliage in the spring, which then turns the most wonderful shades of red, orange and yellow in the fall. As a large specimen that can grow to an eventual 50 feet tall over time, the October Glory Red Maple really is an impressive tree. This is a great Red Maple for reliable fall color.
The October Glory Red Maple is relatively fast growing and produces a pleasing rounded form. Being easy to grow and low maintenance, it is a popular tree that has a multitude of uses. It is perfectly suited to growing as a specimen tree, for lining a driveway or for street planting. Belonging to the red maple family, it is native to North America and suitable for growing in zones 4 to 9.
October Glory Red Maple Care
The October Glory Red Maple will tolerate most soil types but thrives when grown in slightly acidic and well-drained soil. For the best fall color, full sun is recommended, although it will cope with partial shade as well. Preferring an average to moist soil, regular watering is required until established, especially in Southern areas. An annual mulch around the base of the tree will help reduce moisture loss and weed growth. As a large tree, care must be taken when siting this tree so as not to interfere with any overhead or nearby power lines or structures.
Pruning is generally not required except to remove any damaged or dead branches, which can be done in winter. If pruning, any tools used should be sharp and sterilized to help prevent untidy wounds and disease.
October Glory Red Maple Spacing
When fully grown, the October Glory Red Maple can reach a size of 40-50 feet tall and 30-40 feet wide. As a deciduous tree, the October Glory Red Maple can be underplanted with spring bulbs for some early season color.
