This flowering stunner may be known as 'Opening Act Romance' Phlox, but the blooms last well past the opening act and into the summer. The fragrant pinkish-purple flowers feature 5 lobes and have a white halo at the center, and the bright burst of floral color is anchored by slender green foliage. This mounding plant tops out around 20 to 22 inches tall, making it a beautiful addition to the middle of landscape plantings or used as a thriller in a container.
Phlox can be used in borders, landscapes, mass plantings, and containers, and it makes excellent cut flowers. This plant is native to North America, so it will thrive with very little care or maintenance once it is established. Phlox are great for pollinators and will draw in bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. The 'Opening Act Romance' Phlox is a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 8.
Opening Act Romance Phlox Care
Plant Phlox in areas that receive full to part sun. The ideal spot will receive at least 4 to 6 hours of daily sunlight. This plant has average water needs, so let the top few inches of soil dry out before giving the plant water. Established plants may only need water during a dry spell, but Phlox in pots will require water weekly. Use well-draining, fertile soil, and otherwise, Phlox is not fussy and can handle pH levels that are acidic or neutral. Regular feedings will promote new growth and plenty of blooms.
Phlox may look overgrown as the summer wears on, so trim the plant back by as much as ⅓ to encourage new branching and more flowers.
Opening Act Romance Phlox Spacing
The 'Opening Act Romance' Phlox is a medium height mounding plant and typically grows 20 to 22 inches tall. Space plants 33 to 36 inches apart when planting in the ground. A 12-inch pot provides enough space for 2 plants.
