Let's play ball! It’s Opening Day in the garden! Flower buds tinged in light green develop into white blossoms that are so big you could almost hit them out of the park. Covered from May to June in 3 inch wide clusters of blossoms, this beautiful viburnum reaches a height of 5 to 10 feet with a spread of 5 to 8 feet is sure to be a homerun wherever it's planted. A bonus is the contrasting dark, green foliage turns a deep red-purple in fall.
A low maintenance, compact, rounded shrub that is a carefree bloomer flowering the first year, easy to care for and fast growing. It would be wonderful as a hedge, accent plant in the perennial garden, foundation planting and do well in a pot or planter that is 3 feet high and 3 feet wide at minimum. Heat tolerant, disease resistant, pest resistant, deer resistant and winter hardy in zones 5 to 8.
Opening Day™ Doublefile Viburnum Care
This viburnum does best in full sun or partial shade in an area which is moist and well-drained but is tolerant of a wide range of soils. It does well growing in an urban setting.
Flowering on old wood, it is best to prune this viburnum right after flowering to reduce height, maintain shape or open up the shrub. Deadheading is not necessary with this viburnum.
Opening Day™ Doublefile Viburnum Spacing
Opening Day should be spaced at a distance of 5 to 8 feet when planted en masse, as a privacy hedge or screen. A good choice for a pot or planter large enough to support it provided the containers are spaced out at the same distance.
