Orange Rocket Barberry, Berberis thunbergii ‘Orange Rocket’, provides a striking focal point in any shrub border. Its unusual upright habit and evergreen foliage make this a fantastic centerpiece for any garden. The bright coral-orange colored foliage in the spring changes to red foliage in the fall.

These shrubs are great planted by itself as a specimen or in a mass planting. We also like to use these as a colorful shorter evergreen hedge or border by planting several next to each other. The columnar habit makes this a fantastic plant for garden planters as a "thriller" and focal point of the container.

Orange Rocket Barberry Care

When planting, be sure to water regularly until the plant is established. This typically will take 3-4 months. Apply 1 to 2 inches of mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture, reduce weeds, and add extra protection against harsh weather conditions. Plant in full sun for best color, although the plant can also grow in partial shade.

Apply a balanced slow release fertilizer each spring for best results. Once established, the plant is drought tolerant and can handle a variety of weather conditions with no issues. The plant does have tiny thorns on it, like most barberry do. So you can use these as a barrier plant too.

Pruning Orange Rocket Barberry

Prune back one third after spring after the plant has flushed out with new growth. This allows you to enjoy the brilliant coral-orange color of the new growth. This helps the plant to maintain compact shape. To rejuvenate older plants, you can remove some of the older stems all the way down to the ground. This allows the new branches to flourish.

Orange Rocket Barberry Spacing

Plant singly as a specimen or in a mass planting, 2 or 3 feet apart, center to center. You may also grow into a hedge by planting 18 inches apart, center on center. Another great idea is to plant these as column intervals to provide depth and height to the garden. Your friends, neighbors and family will surely comment on it once they see it.

    Beautiful...

Posted by Mary Miller on Apr 12, 2023

I had ordered two Orange Rocket Barberrys from a different supplier last year. Both plants arrived in terrible shape: soil completely dried out and 90% of the leaves had fallen into the box. Surprisingly, one of the two made it but the second was unrevivable. This year I ordered one from Plant Addicts, and it arrived in a few days in PERFECT conditiontion! Great service! Great quality!

    Beautiful...

Posted by Christine Rayl on Jun 17, 2021

The Orange Rocket Barberry is gorgeous and even though barberry shrubs are popular in my area the Orange Rocket is rare & stunning. They came very well packed, quickly and healthy. I live in the SE and so I was worried about the heat during shipping - no problems. The only negative I would say they are not quite as large as I hoped. They seem a little small for their pots- but more importantly they are healthy so they’ll grow.

The plants are very pretty but when I got home I found the box upside down on the porch.

Good service, but shipping can ruin your plants.

Posted by Stephen Perreault on Jun 10, 2020

Good service, but shipping can ruin your plants. Maybe not their fault, but the service relies too much on the shipper for the end product quality. In my case, the package with the plants may have been packed properly, but the shipper threw them on the porch upside down and half the branches were broken. Not sure if they will survive but I planted them. Pretty disappointed that plant attics doesn’t work with a more qualified shipper who takes better care of the packages despite the markings all over the boxes.

    red shrubs

Posted by Kathleen Trost on Mar 23, 2019

I wanted to plant some red shrubs around my house that wouldn't lose its leaves. this seemed like a great choice, and really the only option if I wanted that color. I am very happy I bought these and the bushes arrived very healthy. I was able to plant the day after these arrived by fedex. overall very easy to care for after that!

    as advertised

Posted by John on Oct 11, 2018

After reading several other reviews, I was anticipating very small plants arrive. I was pleasantly surprised. The plants are the size they say they are. So no complaints from me. i'm glad I took the risk and ordered. I'll definitely be coming back to buy more. Just need the bank account to grow a little before I do. haha
