Growing Zones
Orchid Frost Lamium, Orchid Frost Dead Nettle, or Lamium maculatum ‘Orchid Frost’, is a robust perennial groundcover that spreads quickly with thick, luscious foliage that forms a dense carpet of heart-shaped, silvery-green leaves with deep serrated edges. The foliage is generally semi-evergreen, but is evergreen in mild-winter climates. The shimmering foliage of Orchid Frost grows to a height of 4 to 6 inches, with a wide spread of 15 to 18 inches. In June and July, the Orchid Frost Lamium blooms with a thick blanket of small, clustered, vivid-purple flowers.
Bred by Plants That Work, Orchid Frost Lamium has an aggressive, spreading growth habit, and makes a perfect long-blooming ground cover or accent in areas with shady spots. Native from Europe to Western Asia, Orchid Frost Lamium is often utilized in containers or as ground cover beneath shady shrubs and trees. The stems of the Orchid Frost will root into the ground as they spread. It is deer and rabbit resistant and attracts butterflies.
Orchid Frost Lamium Care
Orchid Frost Lamium should be grown in partial sun to dappled shade, and can even bloom in full shade. The soil for your lamium should be well-drained. It requires light water, as over-watering will cause root rot. Your lamium will require some grooming in the late fall or winter to remove old or unsightly growth. Orchid Frost will self seed and it is a great selection in colder climates.
Orchid Frost Lamium Spacing
Orchid Frost Lamium is an excellent choice for ground cover in any landscape, including those with slopes or ledges. You can use it along borders or in containers and planters of all types. They are particularly lovely in a hanging basket, and pair well with crocus, freesia, and other spring bulbs. They are also stunning when interspersed with hostas and ferns. You should plant your Orchid Frost Lamium 16 inches apart.
