Feature
For a really striking succulent, check out the stunning Painted Echeveria. This Echeveria nodulosa produces long green leaves with burgundy-red margins and markings. In summer it can develop pink and yellow blooms on a stem 12 inches high. When given the right growing conditions, it is wonderfully easy to grow and care for.
The Painted Echeveria is amazingly low maintenance. Preferring desert-like conditions, it is no surprise that it is drought and heat tolerant. This succulent is winter hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11. Plant it on its own in a decorative pot or en masse with other Echeverias in a rock or gravel garden.
Painted Echeveria Care
The Painted Echeveria grows and looks its best when it is grown in full sun. Like other succulents, the Painted Echeveria requires a free-draining soil, as its roots will not tolerate wet or soggy conditions. It has low watering needs and only requires supplemental water when the top layer of soil is dry. Fertilizing is not generally required. However, you can apply a weak succulent fertilizer in early spring to give it a boost.
Old flower stalks can be removed at the base to neaten the appearance. Old, brown, and dry leaves can be gently pulled away as required.
Painted Echeveria Spacing
The Painted Echeveria generally grows to 6 to 8 inches tall and forms a rosette 5 to 6 inches across. Spacing plants 5 to 7 inches apart will give them room to mature over time.
