Growing Zones
For an unusual and eye-catching shrub, the Paisley Pup™ Doghobble Leucothoe perfectly fits the bill. Also known as Leucothoe fontanesiana 'SMNLFGRV', this doghobble’s variegated foliage changes between bronze, cream, green and pink. Furthermore, it produces small lily-of-the-valley-like flowers in spring. Growing to 3 to 4 feet tall, this evergreen shrub has many garden uses and works well in small urban gardens.
An American native, the Paisley Pup™ Doghobble Leucothoe is suitable for growing in zones 5 to 8. It has good disease resistance and is considered deer tolerant. This Leucothoe is great for providing year-round interest and attracting pollinators when in bloom. Use Paisley Pup™ Doghobble in a foundation planting, low hedge, or specimen planting.
Paisley Pup™ Doghobble Leucothoe Care
Paisley Pup™ Doghobble Leucothoe produces the best foliage color in partial or dappled shade. It requires an acidic soil that is fertile, moist, and well drained. Irrigate frequently until established and from then on during dry spells. An ericaceous-specific fertilizer applied in early spring will help support growth and foliage color.
The Paisley Pup™ Doghobble Leucothoe naturally forms a mounding habit and needs little pruning. However, you can remove any wayward branches and lightly trim to shape after blooming in spring.
Paisley Pup™ Doghobble Leucothoe Spacing
The Paisley Pup™ Doghobble Leucothoe can reach a final size of 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide. When growing a grouping of these shrubs, space plants around 4 to 5 feet apart center on center.
