Deer resistant, there is no need to worry about Poquito™ Blue Hummingbird Mint’s soft puffs of violet suddenly disappearing into thin air. Relatively disease resistant, drought tolerant, and low maintenance, this lovely deciduous perennial is perfect for the amateur gardener with a busy schedule.
Poquito™ Blue Hummingbird Mint Care
Poquito™ Blue Hummingbird Mint thrives in full sun. Plant it during the spring in warm soil that is sandy and drains well. This herbaceous perennial requires soil with a pH between 6.0 to 7.5. Low maintenance, this flowering plant possesses average watering needs and minimal to no fertilizing needs. Water one to two times per month. To prevent fungal disease; however, do a moisture check prior to watering. If the top one to two inches are dry, then water. If not, wait a day or two to check again. This perennial tolerates nutrient-depleted soil well. If needed though, after a year, you can feed Poquito™ Blue Hummingbird Mint a balanced fertilizer annually.
To encourage a more robust production of blooms, deadhead spent flowers throughout the blooming season. Then, after the first hard freeze in autumn, winterize Poquito™ Blue by cutting it back to an inch or two above the ground in order to control its spread and support its growth the following year.
Poquito™ Blue Hummingbird Mint Spacing
Poquito™ Blue Hummingbird Mint does well when planted en masse in borders and beds. Whether grown alone or with other companion plants such as Rudbeckia, Lavender, Rosemary, Marigold, and Russian Sage, this ornamental adds charm to rock, wildlife, and prairie gardens. Space plants about 12 inches apart. Plus, Poquito™ Blue is a superb filler when grown in containers.
