True red is the rarest color in rose of Sharon, and Paraplu Red® is the closest we’ve seen come through trials with real, stop-you-in-your-tracks impact. Hibiscus syriacus ‘Rwoods11’ sets large, saturated red blooms against dark green foliage, and the color holds up in full sun instead of fading into “pink-ish.” It matures around 6–10 feet tall and about 5 feet wide, proving fast height for screening or specimen impact. The habit is naturally upright and polished, so it looks designed even without pruning.

Blooms arrive in summer and keep rolling through heat, pulling in hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees along the way. This variety was selected for durability, handling drought once established and tolerating the everyday challenges of real yards. It flowers on new wood, which makes it forgiving after winter and flexible if you ever want to shape it. Use it as a flowering hedge, a tall anchor in mixed borders, or a slim screen that doesn’t feel heavy. It’s also a strong pick for sunny foundations where you want vertical structure with little maintenance.

Paraplu Red® Rose of Sharon Care

Plant in full sun for the best bloom count and the richest red tones. It adapts to a wide range of soils as long as water can move through the site after rain; avoid spots that stay saturated. Water regularly the first growing season to help roots establish, then taper off, as this shrub is notably tolerant of drier spells once it’s settled. If growth or flowering seems sluggish, apply a granular flowering-shrub fertilizer in spring as new growth begins. A 2–3 inch mulch layer helps conserve moisture and keeps weeds from competing at the base.

Routine pruning isn’t required because the plant holds an elegant outline on its own. If you want to control height or tighten the shape, prune in early spring before vigorous growth starts. Remove any winter-damaged tips at the same time, and thin a few older stems if the center ever gets crowded. Skip late-season pruning so the plant can harden off before winter.

Paraplu Red® Rose of Sharon Spacing

Space plants about 5 feet apart for a hedge or screen that fills in without becoming a tangled wall. For a single specimen, give it 6 feet of breathing room so the upright form stays crisp. In containers, start with a 22–24 inch pot for young plants and plan to upsize as it gains height. Pair it with Russian sage for a hazy contrast, plant daylily at the base for midsummer color echo, or use blue oat grass nearby to sharpen the red with cool-toned texture.
