With its unusually luminous, blue-violet flowers, this vibrant Rose of Sharon provides long-lasting summer color with little fuss. The striking blooms are massive, resembling a tropical hibiscus. They open with their intense hue in mid-summer and continue into fall. The leaves of the showy, deciduous shrub are dark green. It grows 60-96 inches tall. Some attributes of this Hibiscus include easy care, larger and showier flowers that last three days, elegant habit, and long blooming.
Paraplu Violet® Rose attracts butterflies and hummingbirds to each stunning bloom’s magenta eye. It has a tidy, upright habit with a height that is practical for any landscape. This fast-growing shrub is heat and drought tolerant and is resistant to deer. Use it in the landscape as a flowering hedge for screening. It is stunning in a mass planting, or alone as a focal point in your flower garden border. Paraplu Violet® Rose perfectly complements cottage-garden designs.
Paraplu Violet® Rose of Sharon Care
Rose of Sharon tolerates some neglect, so plant care is easy. It thrives in full sun but takes partial shade. It is hardy in USDA zones 5 - 9. Plant it in well-drained soil, preferably with high fertility; it likes slightly acid conditions. Water the shrub moderately and be aware that Rose of Sharon does not like soggy conditions. You may use a granular rose or flowering-shrub fertilizer in early spring, once the ground has thawed. One of the many qualities of Paraplu Violet® Rose of Sharon Hibiscus x is its tolerance for a wide range of soil pH. In addition, it is salt tolerant.
This plant needs no special winter care. Little pruning is needed due to its graceful habit. It blooms on new wood, therefore, if you do want to give it a light pruning, early spring is best before buds develop. Note that this shrub will leaf out late in spring. Don’t worry, it isn’t dead, just be patient and your gorgeous Rose of Sharon will reward you with its beauty.
Paraplu Violet® Rose of Sharon Spacing
Large plants need plenty of space to produce maximum blooms. Therefore, wherever you plant it – as a screen, as a mass planting, or in a flower border – plant spacing should be 48-60 inches.
