Dozens of bright pink bells dangle on dainty stems lifted above the silver green geranium-style leaves on the Paris Coral Bells Heuchera hybrid perennial. Creating vast drifts of color, these miniature clumping plants are a great addition to an informal cottage garden, rock garden or landscape border. They look great, too, in combination with colorful annuals in patio or porch planters. Butterflies and bees are attracted to the sweet nectar these flowers produce.

Native to North America, Heuchera, or alumroot as it is commonly called, grows in all but the hottest and coldest climates in the United States. Hardy in Zones 4 to 9, they grow as wildflowers in a wide variation of habitats. Hybridizing Heuchera has allowed gardeners to standardize care amongst most of the varieties that are available today, making it easier to include these lovely late spring bloomers in the garden. Coastal gardeners will appreciate that this striking perennial is salt tolerant and that it is not typically browsed on by deer.

Paris Coral Bells Care

Heuchera thrive in part shade, humus rich fertile soil that drains well. Be sure to mulch or water frequently if they are grown in full sun to help maintain soil moisture. The ideal soil pH will be around 5.5 to 6.2. Although they are tolerant of dry conditions once established, water regularly to maintain optimal conditions for best results. Fertilizer is generally not needed as they tolerate an average soil as well, but a light application of well composted organic material will be appreciated. Too much fertilizer will cause excess foliage growth and reduced flower production.

Deadheading Coral Bells is recommended to extend the bloom period. Each stem will bloom up to two months, and the plant will continue to bloom until the first frost. Pruning stems to the ground once it ceases blooming for the year, plus a good layer of mulch to protect the root zone, will be all that is needed to prepare your perennial for its winter rest. As with most perennials, they need to be divided every 3 to 4 years to maintain the vigorous growth and prolific blooming.

Paris Coral Bells Spacing

Space your plants about 14 inches apart to allow for good air circulation and growth. Maturing at about 10 inches tall and 14 inches wide, this clumping perennial will appreciate the extra room. These delicate, airy plants look great when massed out in your landscape, around the base of a deciduous tree on a woodland edge, in rock gardens, or in a landscape border or garden bed. You are going to want to plant this in your garden this spring!
