Growing Zones
Its narrow, upright form allows the Parkland Pillar® Birch to fit into landscapes with limited space. The branches are not very long, and the entire tree has a narrow form once it matures. The Betula platyphylla has dense dark green foliage, providing a nice contrast against the white bark. The leaves have serrated edges and pointed ends. The green foliage turns a bold golden-yellow hue by late fall.
Use Parkland Pillar to create a privacy screen around an outdoor entertaining area, line a driveway or street, or add height and fall color to a yard. This tree is drought and heat tolerant, allowing it to thrive in challenging conditions. Grow the Parkland Pillar® Birch in zones 3 through 7.
Parkland Pillar® Birch Care
Rich, slightly acidic soil with good drainage is vital for this tree. The Parkland Pillar® Birch needs full sun and regular water weekly. Established trees are drought tolerant but will do best with water during a dry period. Fertilize each spring using a balanced product intended for trees.
Prune in later winter as needed to shape the tree. Remove suckers and offshoots during the spring pruning. Dead or damaged branches can be removed at any time.
Parkland Pillar® Birch Spacing
Mature Parkland Pillar® Birch trees stand 35 to 40 feet tall and 6 to 7 feet wide. Plant trees 5 to 6 feet apart when creating a continuous planting.
