Growing Zones
Large, showy flowers on reaching vines make the Passion Flower Clematis or Clematis uvaria 'florida' stand out in a landscape. Flowers bloom in late spring and summer, with the occasional rebloom throughout fall. Dense greenery fills the spaces between blooms and provides an excellent backdrop for the flowers.
Clematis have a vining growth habit and do best when they have something to climb. Plant a row of Passion Flower Clematis plants along a fence to create a charming screen. Use an arbor or trellis to support the vines. Pollinators love the showy flowers, while the flowers and foliage are deer and rabbit resistant.
Passion Flower Clematis Care
Plant Passion Flower Clematis in rich, moist, well-drained soil. Clematis grows best in full sun, but ideally, the roots will be in the shade. Morning sun and afternoon shade work well in hot climates. Apply a low-nitrogen fertilizer in early spring and use a balanced fertilizer every four weeks for the remainder of the growing season.
Remove spent flowers to encourage more blooms. Prune in late winter or early spring to remove leggy overgrowth and promote a full form.
Passion Flower Clematis Spacing
Passion Flower Clematis grows to 6 to 8 feet long and 3 to 6 feet wide. Space plants 6 feet apart when creating a dense screen.
