The lovely flowers of the Penny™ Denim Jump Up Viola have a velvet-like appearance. Three overlapping petals have yellow eyes, surrounded by dark blue and white, with a lighter shade of blue near the margin. This continuously blooming perennial puts on a show from spring through the end of the growing season. Broad green leaves have scalloped edges and fill in the spaces between the blooms. This cultivar can handle increased levels of heat without becoming leggy.
With a compact, mounded growth habit, the fast-growing Viola has a very full look, but at 4 to 6 inches tall, this plant is better suited for the front of beds, borders, or containers. Plant several together for an impressive display, or include them as part of a mixed bed for a burst of color. Locate this plant in a container on a deck or porch or near a door or window so you can enjoy the fragrant blooms. This hardy plant grows as a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 8.
Penny™ Denim Jump Up Viola Care
Viola plants love the shade, so select an area that receives no more than 4 hours of sunlight. Morning sun and afternoon shade is ideal. Acidic soil that is rich but well-drained is best. Water weekly or when the soil dries out. Plants in containers will need water more often. This plant is drought-tolerant, but it may not bloom as much without consistent dampness. Feed the plant using a slow-release fertilizer in the spring and again midway through the summer.
Pinch off faded flowers to encourage more blooms. If the Viola looks leggy, trim back one-third of the growth.
Penny™ Denim Jump Up Viola Spacing
The Penny™ Denim Jump Up Viola is an upright plant with a mounded growth habit, and it will reach 4 to 6 inches tall and 6 to 8 inches wide. Plants can be spaced 6 to 8 inches apart for a full and lush look.
