Penny™ Orange Jump-up provides an abundance of continuous cheerful blooms like an annual, but is a cold hardy perennial plant. It is a hybrid viola and part of the Penny™ Series with a hardy root system and bigger blooms. The flowers are bright orange with deep purple upper petals. These jump-ups are one of the earliest plants to flower in the spring and will continue blooming through the fall. They may even reward you with sporadic flowers through the winter in mild climates. The flowers are edible and have a slightly sweet flavor that is delicious in salads, herbal teas or creamy soups.
Penny™ Orange violas grow in a low, mounded shape with a semi-trailing habit. They are cold hardy to zone 4 and semi-evergreen in places with mild winters. They are more heat tolerant than other varieties, and the blooms hold up well after rainstorms. Use them to fill hanging baskets for a long flower show or to edge a garden bed with easy pops of color.
Penny™ Orange Jump-up Viola Care
This plant grows well in full sun to partial shade with at least 3 hours of direct sun. In hot climates, it prefers some afternoon shade. It is not particular as to soil type or pH and prefers consistent moisture. Add a layer of compost around the base of the plant to conserve moisture and keep the roots cool. Fertilize lightly in the spring with an all-purpose formula to support more blooms during the growing season.
This plant requires minimal maintenance. You can shear back spent flowers to prevent self-seeding and encourage bushier growth. Divide plants each fall to ensure a fresh crop each season, or allow it to self-seed to ensure persistence in the garden.
Penny™ Orange Jump-up Viola Spacing
When planting Penny™ Orange in groups, space each plant approximately 6 inches apart on center. This viola can be easily grown in practically any container as long as the pot has good drainage.
