Growing Zones
For a Bergenia with larger than average flowers, try the Peppermint Patty Pigsqueak Bergenia. A Bergenia hybrid, Peppermint Patty Pigsqueak produces white flowers that stand proud above its large, wavy, green leaves. The spring flowers have a pink throat that seeps up the petals, edged in pink. With a final height of around 22 inches, this perennial is a versatile garden plant.
With its semi-evergreen foliage, the Peppermint Patty Pigsqueak Bergenia is suitable for growing in zones 4 to 8. It will help attract pollinators and is resistant to both deer and rabbits. Once established, this Bergenia needs minimal care and is considered low maintenance. Peppermint Patty is perfect for providing ground cover, edging a path, or growing in a mixed border.
Peppermint Patty Pigsqueak Bergenia Care
Peppermint Patty Pigsqueak Bergenia can tolerate both sun and shade; however, it is happiest in partial shade. This perennial tolerates both acidic and alkaline soils as long as they are well drained. Regular watering after planting and for the first growing season will help it establish. A general-purpose, slow-release fertilizer applied in the spring will help support flowering and foliage production.
Deadheading spent flower stalks will help keep a tidy appearance. In late winter, simply cut back the old, tattered foliage before new growth emerges.
Peppermint Patty Pigsqueak Bergenia Spacing
When mature, the Peppermint Patty Pigsqueak Bergenia can grow to 22 inches high and 16 to 18 inches across. A plant spacing of 16 to 18 inches is appropriate when growing in a group.
