Perfect Edging Tall Fescue Grass brings crisp blue-green blades edged in creamy white, giving a clean, structured look long before most perennials wake up. It settles into a tidy, upright clump about 14–18 inches tall and 18–24 inches wide, then sends up pale tan seedheads that hover above the foliage. Compared with shorter blue fescues, it holds more height in the border and makes a better edging grass without disappearing behind neighbors. Our designers use it to give definition through the seasons, because the variegation stays sharp even in tough, lean soils.
Once established, Festuca arundinacea ‘Perfect Edging’ handles dry stretches and coastal conditions better than many ornamental grasses, with documented deer resistance that helps in rural landscapes. In mild winters it mostly keeps its foliage, but goes completely dormant in colder areas. The upright habit makes it useful for stabilizing slopes or lining paths where foot traffic is close and you need foliage to stay in bounds. Slip it between flowering perennials to break up bloom-heavy plantings, or repeat it in drifts to create a steady “edge” through early summer when the seedheads appear.
Perfect Edging Tall Fescue Grass Care
Give Perfect Edging Tall Fescue full sun for the strongest color, although part sun works and afternoon shade helps in the hottest regions. Plant in well-drained soil that ranges from average to poor with a pH around 7.0. Avoid low spots that stay wet, because soggy roots are the fastest way to thin out a clump.
Water deeply after planting, then let the top few inches of soil dry before watering again; established plants do best with infrequent soakings rather than frequent sips. A light spring feeding is enough if your soil is extremely sandy, but in richer beds fescue usually doesn’t need much fertilizer. In cold zones, expect the foliage to brown back over winter and regrow from the base once temperatures warm.
In early spring, shear or cut the clump back to about 3–4 inches before new growth begins, and hand-comb out any dead blades that linger. If the center starts to open up, divide the clump in spring every couple of years to refresh vigor and keep the edging line tight. In containers, protect the pot from repeated freeze-thaw cycles by moving it to a sheltered spot or grouping it with other pots.
Perfect Edging Tall Fescue Grass Spacing
Space plants 18–24 inches apart so each clump can fill in without crowding its neighbors. For a container “thriller” role, a 14–16 inch pot gives the roots room while keeping the plant proportionate to mixed plantings.
In the landscape, pair it with ice plant or creeping phlox for a long-season flowering mix that won’t overwhelm its clean lines, and add viburnum nearby for a woody contrast behind the grass. In containers, combine it with low sedum spilling over the rim and foamy bells for a foliage-forward mix that stays interesting even when flowers slow down.
