With its larger and bluer blooms than other cultivars, the Picture Purrfect Catmint really is a must-have Nepeta. It forms a low, but wide mass of green aromatic foliage upon which its flowering stems grow. Loved by pollinators, especially bees and butterflies when in flower, this catmint blooms earlier than other varieties. The Picture Purrfect Catmint is an ideal plant to add long-season color to your garden.
Being a compact variety, this nepeta can be used for lining a path or border, growing en masse, or adorning a container. It needs little care, and once established it is tolerant of drought-like conditions. As a hardy perennial, Picture Purrfect is suitable for growing in zones 3 through 8. It is ideal for adding to a cottage garden scheme or growing in a gravel garden.
Picture Purrfect Catmint Care
Even though this nepeta can tolerate some partial shade, it thrives when grown in full sun. Picture Purrfect prefers well-drained soil and can tolerate poor soils, but dislikes waterlogged soil, which can lead to root rot. Nepetas are considered drought tolerant, but will need frequent watering until they have bedded down and developed a good root system. Unless grown on a very poor soil, no fertilizer needs to be applied.
After the initial blooms have faded, they can be sheared off to tidy its appearance and help encourage further flowers. When grown in a planter, Picture Purrfect Catmint will need more frequent irrigation than if grown directly in the soil.
Picture Purrfect Catmint Spacing
When given the right growing conditions, Picture Purrfect Catmint can reach a height of 10-12 inches and spread of 22-24 inches. If growing this nepeta as part of a large group, it can be planted at a spacing of around 20-24 inches apart.
