Growing Zones
Masses of bright pink flower clusters define Buddleia davidii ‘Pink Delight,’ a butterfly bush known for its long-lasting summer blooms. Arching stems hold fragrant, conical flower spikes that can reach up to 15 inches in length. The gray-green foliage provides contrast to the deep pink flowers. This fast-growing deciduous shrub typically matures to 6-8 feet tall and 4-6 feet wide, making it a striking addition to sunny borders, pollinator gardens, or mixed perennial beds.
Pink Delight Butterfly Bush is highly attractive to butterflies, hummingbirds, and other beneficial pollinators. Its drought tolerance and resistance to deer and rabbits make it a low-maintenance choice for many landscapes. In colder zones, it often behaves like a herbaceous perennial, dying back to the ground in winter and regrowing vigorously in spring. Pink Delight is an excellent option for mass plantings, cottage gardens, or as a focal point in containers.
Pink Delight Butterfly Bush Care
For best performance, plant in full sun with well-drained soil. While adaptable to various soil types, it prefers moderately fertile conditions and benefits from occasional feeding with a balanced fertilizer in early spring. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish deep roots, then reduce watering once established. Avoid poorly drained locations, as excessive moisture can lead to root issues.
To encourage continuous blooming, remove spent flower spikes throughout the season. In colder climates, cut back the shrub to a few inches above ground level in late winter or early spring. This promotes vigorous new growth and enhances flowering. Regular thinning of older stems improves air circulation and maintains a tidy appearance.
Pink Delight Butterfly Bush Spacing
Space plants 4-6 feet apart for a full, natural look in garden beds or mass plantings. When grown as a hedge, maintain 3-4 feet of spacing to allow for proper air circulation. If planting in a container, use a pot at least 16-20 inches in diameter to support its rapid growth and extensive root system.
