Here is an evergreen perennial that not only has prominent foliage throughout the year, but changes colors with the seasons. The thick, leathery leaves of Bergenia change from green, to maroon to purple as the temperature changes. The bright pink flowers appear in the early spring at the same time as Forsythia and Daffodils and again later in the summer to usher in the fall.
Pink Dragonfly Heartleaf Bergenia couldn’t be any easier to maintain. Deadheading the spent blooms in the spring will allow the foliage to grow through the summer and encourage a flush of late summer blooms. Bergenia is often used as an edging plant along a driveway or sidewalk or at the edge of a woodland planting scheme. Pink Dragonfly would also make for a striking, modern plant grown in containers or included in a mixed seasonal planting.
Pink Dragonfly Heartleaf Bergenia Care
Bergenia will thrive in full sun to part shade, although more shade will help to keep the color of the leaves more intense. Average soil texture and a pH from acidic to alkaline are acceptable. PInk Dragonfly will be drought tolerant after establishing. Supplemental irrigation during hot and dry weather is only needed for the first couple years.
Fertilizing Pink Dragonfly is best done early in the spring while soils are moist and before the blooms open. A well balanced, slow release feed will benefit not only blooming, but foliage growth. Pruning back of spent leaves and flower stems early in the winter is the only maintenance required. In most hardiness zones Bergenia remains evergreen and does not fully die back during the winter. It will benefit from having the older leaves removed in the early spring. Dividing of congested clumps will be needed every 3-4 years.
Pink Dragonfly Heartleaf Bergenia Spacing
Heartleaf Bergenia are fairly slow growers, but will become quite dense clumps over time. A mature height and width of 12-16 inches makes this a great choice as a groundcover or at the front of a woodland planting scheme. Space each plant at 16 inches, center on center, to provide adequate air circulation.
