Adding plants to the garden that have many functions can be a little intimidating. Pink Grapefruit Yarrow is the plant you’ve been looking for. Pollinator attractor, good for cut flowers, compact and low maintenance growth, grows in dry areas or slightly damp, long blooming period when most other perennials are flagging, deer, rabbit and even squirrel resistant. This plant ticks all of the boxes.
Achillea ‘Pink Grapefruit’ is a very compact 30 inches tall x30 inches high. No staking needed for this hard worker. Yarrow can be used as an edging plant, mixed in a wild flower meadow type planting or on the drier edges of a rain garden. The blooms last even through the droughtiest of summers. Pink Grapefruit is a hybrid of the native Yarrow that can be found all across North America. The juicy pink is a great addition to the Yarrow family.
Pink Grapefruit Yarrow Care
Yarrow will tolerate most any soil texture and bloom better on lean, less fertile soil. The pH can be either acidic or alkaline. 6.5pH is optimal. The soil should be extremely free draining and in full sun.
Pink Grapefruit Yarrow can be cut back after the first flush of blooms is done. This hard cutback early in the season (commonly known as the Chelsea Chop) will encourage a second later flush of even more blooms. Yarrow is best planted in a large group for impact. Pink Grapefruit Yarrow will seldom need staking due to its more compact growth habit. Hardiness zones for Yarrow range from 5-8.
Pink Grapefruit Yarrow Spacing
Yarrow can be planted on the close side. A spacing of 20-24 inches, center on center, is best. Yarrow will also work well in a mixed plant container. The height would easily make it the “filler” in the planting of Yarrow, Golden Salvia (Thriller), Licorice plant (spiller).
