Pink Muhly Grass turns fall plantings into a haze of pink plumes above fine green foliage. It forms tidy clumps about 2 to 3 feet tall and wide, with feathery seed heads creating a breathtaking display in late summer to fall. The plumes are particularly striking when backlit by the sun, adding movement, texture, and color to the landscape. The flowers mature from pink to buff and give Muhlenbergia capillaris a softer winter presence after the main color fades.
This North American native grass grows naturally in prairies, pine openings, dry woodlands, sandy sites, and rocky soils. Its clumping habit stays well behaved, so it will not run through beds like spreading grasses. Pink Muhly Grass tolerates heat, humidity, drought, salt, poor soil, black walnut, and deer browsing once established. Use it along walkways, on slopes, in meadow plantings, coastal beds, parking strips, mixed borders, and large containers.
Pink Muhly Grass Care
Plant Pink Muhly Grass in full sun for the heaviest plume production, although it can tolerate part sun. It adapts to clay, loam, sand, shallow rocky soil, and poor dry sites when drainage is good. Slightly acidic to neutral soil is ideal, although it demonstrates tolerance of broader pH ranges in open, well-drained ground.
Water deeply after planting and continue weekly watering during the first few months while roots develop. Established plants need little supplemental water, but give a deep soak when soil is dry 2 inches down during prolonged heat. Skip fertilizer in most soils, since too much nitrogen can make growth lean or flop. In colder zones, a light winter mulch over the root area can help protect young plants while they settle in.
Cut Pink Muhly Grass back in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Leave 3 to 4 inches of stubble above the crown to protect the growing points. Divide older clumps in spring if the center begins to thin or plants outgrow their spacing.
Pink Muhly Grass Spacing
Space Pink Muhly Grass 2.5 to 3 feet apart for mass plantings, borders, and slope coverage. Use 3 feet apart when each clump should keep a distinct rounded outline. For containers, choose a pot at least 16 inches wide with drainage holes, and move potted plants in colder Zone 6 gardens to a protected spot during winter.
For a sunny, dry planting, combine Pink Muhly Grass with amsonia and asters so the grass peaks as late flowers and fall foliage begin. Red hot poker and sedum suit the same open exposure and drained soil, adding stronger flower shapes against the fine blades. In containers, use Pink Muhly Grass as the upright texture with verbena or African daisy around the rim for warm-season color.
