Pink Pearl Azalea is an ethereal beauty for your garden. The luminous pale pink flowers are borne in large clusters that completely obscure the pale green foliage weeks earlier than other hybrid cultivars, from April onward. Rhododendron ‘Pink Pearl’ is a Kurume hybrid that boasts more flowers and higher cold tolerance than other types. The ultra-compact size of Pink Pearl makes it a useful addition to smaller gardens, urban plantings and even planters or other containers.
Pink Pearl Azalea attracts early beneficial insects and pollinators including mason bees and hummingbirds. Low maintenance should be this azalea’s middle name. Drought tolerant when fully established, Pink Pearl is also tolerant of deer browsing and nibbling from rabbits. Add Pink Pearl to informal hedges, foundation plantings, or borders to cover up bare branches at the base of taller shrubs and herbaceous perennials.
Pink Pearl Azalea Care
Pink Pearl performs best when given protection from the hottest part of the day. Plant it in early or late afternoon sun, or in bright or dappled shade. Well-draining soil is required. Azaleas do not tolerate standing water even for short periods. Pink Pearl is not picky about soil type as long as the pH is acidic to neutral. Amend heavy clay soils with organic compost to assist in drainage over time. Water newly planted shrubs 2-3 times a week until the root system is established. Supplemental watering during periods of hot and dry weather is recommended for good flower bud production, especially late in the summer and fall.
Pruning should be done after flowering in early summer. Pink Pearl Azalea blooms on the previous season’s growth and forms buds late in the summer and fall. Pinching out the ends of smaller branches will encourage denser foliage and more branching. Rejuvenation pruning can be done early in the spring or after flowering to give the shrub time to recover before fall. Only remove one-third or less of the branches at a time, and plan to spread the pruning out over 2-3 years.
Fertilize azaleas in the early summer with a slow-release acidic plant food to encourage flowering and enhance foliage color.
Pink Pearl Azalea Spacing
The overall height and spread for Pink Pearl Azalea are 3 feet. Space plants 30 inches apart on the center if you are constructing a hedge-type planting. Azaleas can be spaced further apart when planted singly in the garden. Container-grown shrubs require at least a 16-inch diameter pot.
