Growing Zones
The Pink Rosebay Rhododendron is a big plant with beautiful flowers blooming on large trusses. Also known as Rhododendron maximum 'Roseum’, the pinkish-purple flowers bloom from June into July. This plant is a broadleaf evergreen with dark green foliage and a leathery texture.
This sizable shrub can be used as a hedge or to define a property line. Rhododendrons retain their foliage all year, providing some coverage throughout the winter. As a native plant, this Rhododendron requires minimal care once it has settled in. Grow the Pink Rosebay Rhododendron as a perennial in zones 4 through 8.
Pink Rosebay Rhododendron Care
Plant this Rhododendron in full to partial shade. The soil should have high organic content and a slightly acidic pH. The soil should also be moist and well drained. Apply a layer of organic mulch or compost to sustain the plant and retain moisture. Water this shrub during a drought or dry spell.
Remove dead or damaged growth as needed, but keep pruning to a minimum as this plant has an excellent natural shape. The Pink Rosebay Rhododendron blooms on old wood, so trim the plant if necessary after the flowers fade. This timing will ensure plenty of blooms for the next cycle.
Pink Rosebay Rhododendron Spacing
The Pink Rosebay Rhododendron has a branched, woody structure. Mature plants stand 6 to 8 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet wide. Space plants 6 feet apart to create a continuous hedge or slightly farther apart for a mass planting.
