If you thought that deciduous plants only change color in autumn, you haven’t seen Pinky Bells Abelia. New fingernail-sized leaves on this shrub start red in color and change to shiny, medium green. They revert to a reddish-orange shade in the fall. Sometimes the leaves will remain on the stems partly through the winter months. If that’s not enough to make you want one for your landscape, it also produces the largest flowers of any abelia variety currently available.
The pendulous, lavender-pink trumpet-shaped flowers on Pinky Bells Abelia bloom from mid-summer to fall on new wood. This shrub is a cross between Abelia schumannii 'Bumblebee' and Abelia zanderi 'Little Richard'. It has a strong root system and a nice full growth habit.
Pinky Bells Abelia Care
Abelia x 'Lynn' Pinky Bells grows best in full sun to partial shade conditions in USDA hardiness zones 6 to 9. This compact shrub will grow to between 2 and 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide at maturity. It’s deer resistant and the five-petaled flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
This plant can be used as a foundation plant, adjacent to water gardens, in a container on a patio or deck, as a focal point in a perennial garden, in mass plantings or as an edging plant to create a low border along walkways. Fertilize in early spring if desired. No pruning is necessary unless the shrub outgrows its space. Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth appears so you don’t remove new growth that will produce flowers.
