There’s nothing false about ‘Pinpoint Blue and Gold” Chamaecyparis lawsoniana. And that’s a big mouthful too. But this gorgeous evergreen has branches that makes it almost look like they are big, bluish green feathers tipped with gold, swaying gently in the wind. This tall conical shaped shrub is a standout in the landscape!
One thing people don’t like about evergreens is the fact that they are mostly prickly. But not Pinpoint Blue and Gold False Cypress! It is very soft to the touch making it ideal for use in the landscape where you can go right up to it or work around it and not worry about getting “stuck”. The coloration makes it easy to use in design as a focal point, as a mass planting or to use as a screen. It is a large shrub, growing to almost 8 ft. tall and 6 ft. wide at maturity. It is native to the Pacific Northwest and is sometimes called ‘Port Orford Cedar’.
Pinpoint® Blue & Gold False Cypress Care
Pinpoint Blue and Gold False Cypress rarely needs pruned except for a broken branch. It is particular about soil, it needs a very well-draining soil and should never be planted where there may be standing water after a storm. When planting, use a slow release fertilizer such as Espoma Holly Tone for acid loving plants. Pinpoint Blue and Gold is hardy from Zone 5a -7b.
Need some greenery for those winter containers? ‘Pinpoint Blue and Gold’ will add the right touch to those arrangements indoors and outdoors.
Pinpoint® Blue & Gold False Cypress Spacing
Space these shrubs 5 to 6 feet apart, center on center. If you are growing these into a hedge, plant closer to 5 feet apart. This will give enough space for the roots to grow when the plant reaches mature size, and also ensure the foliage gets enough direct sunlight.
