The Pocahontas Lilac, also known as Syringa X hyacinthiflora, is a flowering shrub that makes an impressive addition to a yard. Compact purple buds turn into vibrant, violet flowers. The flowers bloom in cone-shaped clusters known as panicles. The fragrant flowers bloom throughout May. Green foliage provides a full and dense appearance.
This shrub has an upright, multi-branched structure. The large stature makes this plant an excellent hedge or privacy screen. Feature the Pocahontas Lilac in a bed or mass planting, plant it near a walkway or patio. Trim the flowers so the fragrant blooms can be enjoyed indoors. The Pocahontas Lilac is a deciduous shrub that grows as a perennial in zones 3 through 8.
Pocahontas Lilac Care
The Pocahontas Lilac needs full sun and moist, rich, well-drained soil. The soil should be alkaline or neutral. Newly planted lilacs need water consistently, while established plants have low to average water needs. Mulch around the plant with compost to hold in moisture. Fertilize in the spring using a balanced plant food.
Prune the shrub as needed after the flowers fade to encourage more prolific flowering the next year. Remove suckers near the base of the plant to prevent new plants from forming.
Pocahontas Lilac Spacing
This shrub has an upright growth habit and will reach 12 to 15 feet tall. The branches will spread out 8 to 12 feet wide. Space Pocahontas Lilac shrubs about 10 feet apart when creating a continuous planting so that air can flow around the foliage.
