For a mass of pink mophead flowers, why not try the Poppet Hydrangea. A large leaf variety, Hydrangea macrophylla 'Poppett' grows to around 4 feet tall and flowers from mid to late summer. The flowers are suitable for drying, so you can appreciate the blooms all year round.

When given the right conditions, the deciduous Poppet Hydrangea is easy to grow and maintain. It is a fast-growing hydrangea and is considered winter hardy down to zone 4. This blooming shrub is ideal for growing in a mixed bed or border. Alternatively, why not try growing it in a large container or planter to brighten up a shady spot?

Poppet Hydrangea Care

The Poppet Hydrangea is happiest and puts on the best floral display when it is grown in partial or dappled shade. It will tolerate most soil types but prefers a fertile, moist and well-drained substrate. It will produce blue flowers in acidic soil. As with other hydrangeas, watering is key, with the aim of keeping the soil moist but not saturated. Fertilize with a slow-release, general-purpose or hydrangea-specific feed in spring.

Prune in early spring by cutting the old flower heads back to just above a pair of new buds. Mulching with organic matter will help lock in moisture over the summer and prevent weeds from appearing.

Poppet Hydrangea Spacing

When fully grown the Poppet Hydrangea grows to around 4 feet tall and wide. Multiple shrubs can be planted out at a spacing of 3 to 4 feet apart.
