Do you love sweets as much as you love plants? Then this unique shrub is for you. Poprocks® Petite Spirea, or Spirea Japonica Odessa, is super sweet like candy - with puffy, round flowers the color of classic bubblegum, they pop right off against the shrub’s bright green foliage. Reaching a fully grown size of about 2 to 3 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, this irresistible shrub can fit right in alongside your walkway, in mixed beds, or as the main attraction in your patio container. This shrub doesn’t require much attention, so you can spend more time simply enjoying it as eye candy.
This yummy shrub is popular with butterflies and songbirds, so you can expect cute critters to stop by and visit your Poprocks® Petite Spirea. Your shrub’s flowers will grow abundantly throughout the summertime, during which you won’t need to perform any maintenance. During autumn and winter, however, you can cut lightly if you want to reduce its size. The shrub is deer and disease resistant as well as drought and cold tolerant, making it very easy to take care of. It is most commonly planted on borders or as an accent plant.
Poprocks® Petite Spirea Plant Care
To plant your shrub, you should dig a hole that is double the width of the pot, and about the same depth as the pot. Before planting it in the ground, loosen up the roots gently with your fingers so that they can spread comfortably once it’s buried in the ground. To facilitate its growth, you can apply some potting soil around the base of your shrub and tap it gently. Once planted, soak it with a watering can for about a minute and a half to help it settle in its new spot. You should then water it every week, especially when the weather is hot. It will benefit the most from full sun exposure for a minimum of 6 hours each day. Although fertilizer is not necessary, you can use an all-purpose fertilizer during the spring when the leaves begin sprouting.
The ideal time to prune your Poprocks® Petite Spirea is during the springtime after the threat of frost is gone. Doing so will help your shrub maintain its shape and keep it looking fresh and healthy. To promote new growth, you can easily cut it down to about a foot tall. However, pruning is completely optional as these shrubs can stay compact on their own.
Poprocks® Petite Spirea Plant Spacing
You can space your shrubs between 2 to 15 feet apart, based on the expected full size of their neighboring plants. For full hedges, you can space them fairly close while allowing for a bit of room between them.
