Growing Zones
The Prague Viburnum or Viburnum X pragense is a large shrub that adds year-round interest to a yard. Pink buds reveal fluffy, creamy-white flowers that bloom in the spring. The flowers bloom in sphere-shaped clusters. By fall, the blooms give way to berries. Dark green leaves have a leathery feel and a puckered texture. This shrub is a broadleaf perennial, so it retains its foliage throughout the winter.
This is a fast-growing plant that makes an excellent hedge or privacy screen. Plant the Prague Viburnum near a patio or outdoor space to shield the area and enjoy the fragrant flowers up close. Grow the Prague Viburnum as a perennial in zones 5 through 8.
Prague Viburnum Care
This shrub performs best in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight, but it can tolerate partial shade. The soil should be moist and well drained. Water the Prague Viburnum when the top couple inches of soil are dry. An annual application of balanced fertilizer in the spring will promote blooms and help the plant thrive.
The Prague Viburnum has a nice natural shape but prune as needed to keep the branches even, and remove straggly growth in the late winter or early spring. Trim crossed branches on neighboring shrubs when creating a hedge.
Prague Viburnum Spacing
The Prague Viburnum is a multi-stemmed shrub that will reach 6 to 8 feet tall and 10 to 12 feet wide. This large shrub makes a beautiful hedge, so space plants 10 to 12 feet apart when creating a continuous look.
