The pretty pink blooms of the Precious Little Pink German Bearded Iris have a bluish cast and are a delight when they open in early summer. Growing to around 1 to 2 feet tall, the Iris germanica 'Precious Little Pink' as it is also known can even rebloom later in the summer. Being lightly fragrant, the blooms are also perfect for growing as a cut flower and bringing into the home.
This iris is both deer and rabbit resistant, making Precious Little Pink suitable for either a rural or urban landscape. It grows from rhizomes and is well adapted to growing in zones 4 to 8. This iris is at home in sunny borders and cut flower gardens, and makes an easy container plant. It is thought that Iris germanica was originally from southern parts of Europe.
Precious Little Pink German Bearded Iris Care
Even though the Precious Little Pink German Bearded Iris can handle a little shade, the best blooms are produced when it is grown in full sun. Expose the top of the rhizome when planting. It prefers fertile and free-draining soil and will not tolerate wet or soggy ground. Water after planting and during the first year; once established, irrigation is generally only needed during prolonged dry spells. As a light feeder, fertilizing is not essential. However, an organic mulch around, but not over the rhizomes, will be of benefit.
After the first flowers fade, you can remove the entire stem to encourage a second flush later in the summer. Remove the foliage as it dies back in the fall, and divide the rhizomes every few years in July to prevent overcrowding.
Precious Little Pink German Bearded Iris Spacing
The Precious Little Pink German Bearded Iris grows to around 1 to 2 feet tall and wide. For maximum effect, plant it in drifts with a spacing of around 12 inches.
